  • Thanks for the short and concise explanation, I was not aware of that Nikon S was the same mount as Contax. So it's better to go for M39 AKA 元9, LTM. For other focal lengths (35,85,135.) simple adapter is fine but you can use the advanced one as well.

They cost mostly from €80 to €300 new eg Kipon, Yeenon etc, there are custom made from butchered Kiev RF camera mounts. For Jupiter-8 and Jupiter-3 and all other 50's in Contax RF mount you need an adapter with built in focusing mechanism a kind of helicoid.

Yes, Contax/Kiev and Nikon S share the same mounts, Kiev RF and Nikon S RF cameras are copies of Contax RF cameras. Cheaper, simple, more universally accepted. My recommendation - unless you really wish to get into the Contax/Kiev mount system it is best to stick to LTM/M39. M42 became an industry wide standard mount for slr lenses and the Russian industry adopted it as well. For some time the Russian industry continued to make Zenit M39 lenses. But thay can be used with a M42 adapter and a conversion M39/M42 thread. But although these lenses might screw into a regular LTM/M39 thread they will never focus properly. This new mount with the same threads but longer flange focal distance is smetimes known as the "Zenit M39" and has a close flange focal distance to the comon M42 lens and can be fairly easily extended by a double thread M39/M42 adapter. At the time various new mount standards were being developed. When the Russian industry started making slr type cameras they naturally had to make longer fange focal distance lenses so they just made them on the same M39 thread pattern. But someone better informed might clarify this with industry accepted correct mount name terminology. Not to be confused with the larger format Kiev cameras which were more related to the Pentacon-6 mount. Certainly where M39 and the Contax mount lenses are both available for the same lens the latter is alway cheaper. I am not an expert on the Contax/Kiev mount or what its popular name is as it has always been too complex for me to consider adding to my collection of adapters. The M42 mount is newer, and I think there are more lens choices in M42, and those will generally be newer than M39 (ie Helios 44-x series).īTW, I have the Jupiter-8 in M39 and love it. I believe the Jupiter-8 Helios 44-2 exists in both M39 and M42 versions.

It's possible someone makes an all-in-one adapter for M39 lenses with M42 registration distances nowadays, I haven't looked. Those lenses require two adapters, so by simply avoiding them while at the shopping phase, you can stick to the "pure" M39 lenses if you want compact solutions.

There was a "crossover" period where old lens designs were made with M39 threads, but had the longer registration distance of M42. Maybe that's changed since I last looked.Īlso watch out for ones that say M42/M39 or M39/M42. Avoid the Kiev mounts, because last I saw, you had to machine your own Kiev adapter yourself since nobody made one. Also known as LTM, which is Leica Thread Mount. To use your M39 adapter, which is my favorite because it's so small, you want the lenses for the Leica / Fed / Zorki mount. Any differences, recommendations between the two mounts? I have M39 adapter but not Contax Kiev so I'm wondering about what adapter I'd need for the Contax.

Thinking about getting a Jupiter 8 and it comes in two different mounts.
